From Pine Magazine: This Thursday we end our 21-month residency at the Star Bar, and we’re really excited about the bands that are playing:

The Wild: The celebratory storytelling and punk-folksy delivery of this three-piece makes you wonder how such clean guitars could get your body shaking so hard. The Wild are a lot of fun, and their approach, defiant in a Bob Dylan sort of way, should give kids everywhere the feeling that they can make a difference in the world, no matter how bad things get in the interim.

This Piano Plays Itself: Reverb-heavy with a hint of shoe gaze, This Piano Plays Itself has become increasingly popular over the last year, and here’s your chance to see why.

Night Moves Gold: Check out our interview with this yacht rock-ish band here.

Tealights: Using a variety of instruments — keyboards, a cello, guitar, bass, a flute, synthesizers and others — Tealights’ sound is a heavier sort of neo-Classical that borders on industrial.

Justin Hughes (Glen Iris, ex-Batata Doce, ex-Rock*a*Teens) and our friend DJ Press Play are on hand to get you dancing, and our good friends from the Other Sound music fest are selling CDs and tickets for the big September 19 show. That show — which lasts all day in Little Five Points — will be awesome. We might be a little biased because we’re one of the sponsors, but think that — with bands like Book of Colors, the Selmanaires and Los Buenos — it’ll be a lot of fun.

Our Star Bar series started with Soundlab 84, ISP and Pine back in January 2008 and, since then, more than 100 bands have played our free First Thursday shows, including: T Model Ford, Missile Command, Club Awesome, Hollow Stars, Hawks, Lay Down Mains, Deleted Scenes, Surfer Blood, Gold Standard, Thy Mighty Contract and many, many, many others. Many. It’s been a lot of fun.

As always, this week’s show is as free as can be. Come support these kick ass bands and the Star Bar. Show starts at 10 prompt.

Save the date :: 2009 Other Sound Music Festival

Posted by admin | Bands | Monday 27 July 2009 4:20 pm

Atlanta, Ga., May 19, 2009 – Today, festival organizers announced the 5th Annual Other Sound Music Festival will take place in Little Five Points, September 19th, 2009, at Criminal Records and the Star Bar.

A stellar lineup is already confirmed that includes: The Selmanaires, Judi Chicago, Jeffery Butzer and Today the Moon Tomorrow the Sun, all scheduled to play in one day!

“We decided on the one day format as an experiment in logistics,” said Eric Holder of Industrial Strength Promotions, “we all live close to Little Five, and have had good experiences with the accessibility of both the Star Bar and Criminal Records’ new location that doubles as a venue; together they are the perfect storm for the Other Sound’s new format”

2009 Other Sound festival organizers are: Eric Holder, for Industrial Strength Promotions; Justin Sias, for Pine Magazine; and Kat Colohan, for Containment Theory Records.

The Other Sound Music Festival is an annual celebration of Atlanta’s thriving music scene. Since 2004, The Other Sound has worked to promote and extend the conversation about Atlanta’s Music scene by recognizing musical acts who are leading the way through their performances, recordings and other distinguishing factors.

Atlanta’s alternative music scene is one of the most exciting atmospheres in the U.S.A. with Deerhunter (Kranky/4AD), Black Lips (Vice) and Snowden (Jetset) along with hugely notable acts including Manchester Orchestra, The Coathangers and Gringo Star who represent the already-crashing next wave of Atlanta’s alternative music scene.

13 Day Mission

Posted by admin | 13 Day Mission, Bands | Sunday 28 June 2009 8:58 am

We first met these progsters at the ISP Space where they melted faces and shredded trepidation with their jazzed-up, psyched-out sound. Led by the tireless Bret Philips, founder of Hijacking Music & the Ozone Lair Recording Studio, 13 Day Mission’s raison d’etre is simple: the band tours, records, and throws house parties where they are friendly to touring bands “as long they rock.” For more information check out: 13 Day Mission, MySpace

Judi Chicago

Posted by admin | Judi Chicago | Monday 22 June 2009 6:38 pm

Judi Chicago is Atlanta’s own super megaton bomb, one packing a payload of fat, fuzzy synth basslines and drumbeats. This electro-dance trio is exploding locally, and gaining a large following in the UK, with a spectacle of tight shorts and fearlessly erotic, pansexual stage antics. Judi Chicago starts dance riots wherever they go, occasionally pulling double duty as house DJs. For more information check out: Judi Chicago’s Website

The Selmanaires

Posted by admin | The Selmanaires | Sunday 21 June 2009 1:04 pm

The Selmanaires were one of the featured bands in “We Fun” and deserved every minute. One of Atlanta’s prized indie bands, their constantly evolving sound veers from psychedelic pop to newer, experimental ambient works the band has labeled “celestial primitive.” They are back on tour with Deerhunter’s Bradford Cox … this time as the backing band for his solo project, Atlas Sound. Today the Moon Tommorow the Sun

Posted by admin | TTMTTS | Saturday 20 June 2009 1:09 pm

Today the Moon, Tomorrow the Sun has quickly become one of the most sought-out bands in the local scene. This prominence is due in part to vocalist Lauren Gibson, whose confident voice cuts through distorted guitars and hammering drums, giving the group’s brand of industrial dance a compelling center. A tight-knit unit, it is the band’s onstage performances, driven by a sense of purpose and sincerity, which marks them as a solid contender for Next Big Thing. Jeffrey Butzer

Posted by admin | Jeffrey Butzer | Saturday 20 June 2009 1:06 pm

The quirky and intimate world of charming multi-instrumentalist Jeffrey Butzer has quickly captured the attention of fans throughout Europe, Asia and the US. In concert, this post modern Morricone is a visual and aural surprise, displaying a remarkable talent of simultaneously playing multiple instruments. Butzer is like Kurt Weill with a toy piano, creating layered, theatrical compositions that stand far above most others. For more information check out: Jeffrey Butzer MySpace

The Wild

Posted by admin | The Wild | Friday 19 June 2009 2:07 pm

The Wild’s celebratory storytelling and punk-folksy delivery makes you wonder how such clean guitars could get your body shaking so hard. Led by Witt Wisebram, The Wild aspire to a sound that is defiant in the manner of Bob Dylan or Joe Strummer, creating awareness of larger issues while still keeping the music first and foremost.
